Undergraduate Accommodation

Main page content

There is a variety of accommodation available at Murray Edwards. The majority of this is on the main College site although we do have a few student houses nearby.

First year students do not need to apply for accommodation. The Tutorial Office will contact you in late August or early September after you've received your exam results and your place is confirmed.  In later years, students choose their accommodation in Lent Term after the Room Draw takes place.

All bedrooms contain:

  • a single bed;
  • a mattress cover and a pillow with an under-pillow case - you can either bring your own bed linen or hire bed linen from the college on a termly basis;
  • a bedside table;
  • a desk with study chair;
  • an easy chair;
  • shelving;
  • a fitted wardrobe.

There may be additional furniture, such as a chest of drawers or additional seating; please see photos for an example of an empty room.

Some rooms are en suite, whilst others share a bathroom with a few students, although in these rooms you will have a sink.

All kitchens are fully equipped with ovens, hobs, microwaves and fridges.  There are freezers in some kitchens.  You should provide your own cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery.

The accommodation charge at Murray Edwards is all inclusive. It covers costs such as the rent of the room, kitchens, heating and lighting, security, IT support/WiFi, maintenance and cleaning of your room and communal areas, upkeep of the grounds, building insurance, residential management/administration and billing. The College has chosen to include these costs in the Accommodation Charge in order to be clear about the amount it costs to live in College and help students with budgeting.

Murray Edwards College is a certified Accreditation Network UK landlord – we follow the code of practice for the management of student accommodation, which sets out expected standards of service in accommodation provision for students.  The College is committed to managing its accommodation in accordance with the relevant provisions of the ANUK/Unipol Code of Standards for Larger Residential Developments (https://www.nationalcode.org). This code establishes a set of management standards for all residential developments managed and controlled by educational establishments and specifies appropriate controls to ensure that the particular needs of students are delivered effectively. The code covers: the allocation of accommodation; information provided prior to the start of the licence agreement; arrangements during the tenancy (including rights and notification of access, repairs and maintenance obligations, provision of information on cleaning, furniture and other facilities, mail delivery, and health and safety matters); and end of tenancy arrangements.

Pearl House

First year students are normally accommodated in Pearl House. All bedrooms are en suite, and are light and modern with plenty of storage space.

Licences for these rooms are 31 weeks (Term-time).

Further information about Pearl House

Orchard Court

Bedrooms in Orchard Court vary in size and style. The rooms on the top floors are split level with a bed upstairs, and a study, storage and seating space downstairs; some students choose to share these. All students have access to well-equipped kitchens, most of which have seating areas.  The bathrooms are shared.

Licences for these rooms are either 33 weeks or 39 weeks.

Paula Browne House

Paula Browne House has 25 rooms over three floors; 17 rooms are en suite whilst the others share a bathroom with another room. There is a spacious kitchen on two floors and two small kitchens on the top floor.

Licences for these rooms are either 33 weeks or 39 weeks.

Buckingham House

Buckingham House has 35 generous en suite bedrooms and is the most modern undergraduate accommodation in College. There are two large kitchen spaces on the first two floors and a smaller additional kitchen on the third floor.

Licences for these rooms are Term-time only (26 weeks) although additional accommodation can usually be arranged (at an extra cost) for students wishing to remain in College during the vacation period.

College Houses

The College owns a small number of houses within a five minute walk of the main site.  These houses are popular with third year students and allow for more independent living but with College facilities close by.  Each house has its own bathroom, kitchen, washing machine and garden.

Licences for these rooms are 39 weeks.

Hammond and Clover Houses

Hammond and Clover Houses are both on the main College site. They have 12 and 6 bedrooms, respectively. Both houses have living and dining spaces, as well as kitchens, allowing for a more sociable living experience.

Licences for these rooms are 33 weeks although additional accommodation can usually be arranged (at an extra cost) for students wishing to remain in College during the vacation period.
