This summer I used my Gateway funding to travel to Granada in Spain, where I completed a 2-week language course.

After flying to Malaga, I travelled to Granada and arrived to my accommodation on Friday afternoon. The language school was located on one of the small winding streets in the old Muslim quarter of Granada called the Albaicin. Over the weekend, I explored the city and visited several viewpoints from which the Alhambra was visible.

Before going to university I had learnt basic Spanish, which I practiced when I visited South America. On Monday, classes began and at first I was slightly overwhelmed because the lessons were taught entirely in Spanish. However, I soon began to really enjoy the lessons, in particular the conversation classes. This was because I was not only learning huge amounts each day but also greatly improving my confidence when speaking.

After class, there were often activities organised by the school, such as going for tapas and walking tours around the city. We also went swimming and trekking, as well as played basketball. At the weekends, we visited the beach at Salobrena and visited some of the markets around Granada. One of the highlights of my time in Granada was going to watch flamenco in the gardens of the Alhambra.

During my time in Granada, I greatly improved my Spanish and learnt more about Spanish culture. I also met many great people from a wide range of different countries and backgrounds.
