Freshers' Frequently Asked Questions

I need to open a UK bank account and so need a letter to say that I am a student.
We cannot issue you with a bank letter until you have arrived in Cambridge and Term has started.  Please fill in our webform and we will process your letter once you have arrived.

I need to book air tickets, when do terms end?
Undergraduates and some taught postgraduate courses have compulsory mock exams in January, before Term starts, so please bear in mind that you may need to be back in College and ready to start exams on 15 January 2024.  Otherwise, Term dates may be found on the University website and you might find an explanation of Term and Full Term helpful.

Can I go home at Christmas?
Yes but undergraduates and some taught postgraduate courses have compulsory mock exams in January, before Term starts, so please bear in mind that you may need to be back in College and ready to start exams on 15 January 2024.

I can't find a reading list for my subject, please will you send me one.
If you have a DoS, they may contact you about preparatory reading.  You should check the relevant Faculty or Department website and look for information for first years.

My DoS hasn't contacted me about the preparatory reading, what should I do?
Don't worry, not all DoS ask their new students to do preparatory reading.  If you can't find anything on your Faculty or Departmental web pages and you want to do some reading, choose something which interests you.

How do I register for Accommodation?
Postgraduates - you should email Tutorial within 2 weeks of receiving your confirmation of a place at Murray Edwards.  Please bear in mind that we have very limited College accommodation for Postgraduate students.
Undergraduates - there is no need to register.  You will be allocated a room and get more details when you sign your lease agreement.
