Mathematics

Main page content

Mathematics at Cambridge is renowned for its emphasis on the development of mathematical intuition and reasoning and offers a wide range of topics across pure and applied mathematics.

In the first year, students choose between Pure and Applied Mathematics (for those intending to continue with Mathematics) and Mathematics with Physics (for those who may want to study Physics after the first year). Students are introduced to the fundamentals of higher mathematics, including the study of algebraic systems (such as groups), analysis of calculus, probability, mathematical methods (such as vector calculus) and Newtonian dynamics and special relativity.

All students take eight subjects, but those taking the Mathematics and Physics route replace two Mathematics subjects with the first year Physics course from Natural Sciences, covering, for example, kinetic theory, electromagnetism, and practical work in a laboratory.

In the second year, students choose from around 15 available options, covering a range of topics, and there are optional computational projects.

In the third year, students can explore their mathematical interests in detail, choosing from a very wide range of topics, such as cryptography, mathematical biology and stochastic financial models. More information about the structure and content of the course can be found on the University website

Mathematics at Murray Edwards College

We aim to admit six undergraduate students in mathematics each year, so they will be studying in a community of around 20 undergraduate students. At Murray Edwards, we place an emphasis on building a mathematical community - both within and across year groups.
